Is this advert a scam?
Here at CarGurus we take fraud seriously. Our dedicated data integrity team works hard at catching fraudulent activity and we strive to protect our platform from those who want to take advantage of it.
We encourage our users to always be alert to any suspicious behavior and to contact us if they feel that something doesn't look right. As a general rule of thumb, trust your gut; awkward language, phrases, and misspelling are all signs of of potential scammers.
Other indicators of fraudulent activity:
- Third-party transactions that reference an "associate" or an "attorney."
- Prices that are simply too good to be true
- Inconsistent listing photo quality (some scammers will take photos of a computer screen), use of only stock photos, or no photos at all
- Photos that include an environment that doesn't match the dealer location.
- Any inquiry about a car that refers to a PayPal, Amazon, eBay, or wire payment
- Inquiry responses that claim the seller is currently "out of the country"
Please feel encouraged to reach out to us via the blue question mark at the bottom of this page if you suspect a seller of fraudulent activity. Overall, when in doubt it is best to play it safe!
